Developer Multi-Mode Calculator Guide

A detailed manual for using TechTube's Multi-Mode Calculator. Master standard arithmetic, memory registers, multi-base numeric conversions across HEX, DEC, OCT, and BIN, bitwise bitmask operators, and rapid keyboard shortcuts.

1. Multi-Mode Calculator Overview

The TechTube Multi-Mode Calculator (/tools/calculator) is a responsive, keyboard-friendly mathematical engine engineered specifically for software engineers, student researchers, and developers.

It unifies three operational modes in one interface:

Standard Mode

Everyday arithmetic, percentages, square roots, reciprocal math, and 4-register memory accumulator.

Programmer Mode

Simultaneous display of Hexadecimal, Decimal, Octal, and Binary representations with bitwise operators.

Scientific Mode

Trigonometric functions (sin, cos, tan), natural and base-10 logarithms, exponents, powers, and constants.

2. Standard Arithmetic & Memory Operations

Standard mode handles standard operations (+, −, ×, ÷, %, √, 1/x, ±) with full operator precedence and floating-point precision formatting.

Memory Registers (MC, MR, M+, M-):
  • MC (Memory Clear): Resets the stored memory register to 0.
  • MR (Memory Recall): Retrieves the current memory value and pastes it into the active display.
  • M+ (Memory Add): Adds the current displayed number to the value in the memory register.
  • M- (Memory Subtract): Subtracts the current displayed number from the memory register.

3. Programmer Mode & Radix Base Conversions

In Programmer mode, the calculator displays a live 4-row base representation matrix:

HEX (Base 16):0x1A4F (Letters A–F enabled)
DEC (Base 10):6735 (Standard decimal)
OCT (Base 8):015117 (Digits 0–7)
BIN (Base 2):0001 1010 0100 1111

Click any row (or press keys) to change the active input base. Unusable digit keys automatically disable (for instance, digits 2–9 disable when in BIN base).

4. Bitwise Operations (AND, OR, XOR, NOT, Shifts)

AND (&)

Returns 1 only where both bits are 1. Used for bitmask filtering (e.g. flags & READ_PERMISSION).

OR (|)

Returns 1 if either bit is 1. Used for combining permission flags (e.g. READ | WRITE).

XOR (^)

Returns 1 if bits differ. Used for toggling bit states and cryptographic hashing parity checks.

NOT (~)

Inverts all bits (one's complement). Converts 1s to 0s and 0s to 1s.

LSH (<<)

Left shift bits by N positions, equivalent to multiplying by 2^N.

RSH (>>)

Right shift bits by N positions, equivalent to integer division by 2^N.

6. Practical Software Engineering Use Cases

1. Linux File Permissions (Chmod Octal to Binary):

Set base to OCT and enter 755. Review the BIN matrix to instantly see 111 101 101 (rwxr-xr-x).

2. Hex Color Code Conversion:

Set base to HEX, enter FF. Look at DEC to verify the 255 max channel value for CSS RGBA.

3. Network Subnetting & IP Bitmasks:

Perform bitwise AND operations between IP addresses and CIDR masks to compute subnet network boundaries.

7. Common Calculation Mistakes to Avoid

Incorrect Active Base:

Typing "10" in Binary base equals decimal 2, while in Hexadecimal it equals decimal 16. Always check the highlighted base pill before entering digits.

Bit Width Overflow:

Shifting beyond 32 bits in JavaScript bitwise operations converts numbers to signed 32-bit integers. Use Programmer mode to observe explicit bit layouts.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator store my calculation history?

Yes. Every completed expression is logged in the collapsible History drawer. You can click any past calculation to reload its result or clear the history at any time.

Does the calculator work offline?

Yes, 100%. All arithmetic, bitwise logic, and trigonometric functions run entirely locally inside your browser with zero network latency.
